1. Don Mclean’s song “American Pie” was largely inspired by the death of Buddy Holly. His plane, which was also carrying Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper, went down in a corn field on a cold winterey night February  3rd 1959. In the song, Mclean describes it as “the day the music died. Fast forward 43 years. February 3rd 2002 is the day my music died.
Ten years ago today (which seems like yesterday) I lost my music. It died. My brother was my teacher, protector, leader, inspiration, living room floor wrestler, woods explorer, barn climber, hay bale jumper, creek wader, girl chaser, car fixer, tobacco setter follower and weed chopper, my friend, my flesh and my best man.
I recount the events of that day, still in disbelief. I rejoice for him because I know where he is. For that I’m jealous and anticipating getting to enjoy what he gets to right now. No more pain. But for me, for the time spent waiting to go home, I miss the music. I miss the days of two little boys running across the hills like wild indians on a war path. I miss the late night talks. I miss all that would have been these past ten years. I miss the music.
